Gourmet Episode 2 Summary

Episode 2 Summary

The crowd was surprised by the announcement as they had thought Bong Joo would be the only successor of Um Ahm Jung. Bong Joo was shocked too as he could not believe what he had just heard. Joo Hee went over to console him but he was too upset to care about her. And so Joo Hee left, leaving Bong Joo alone in the office…

Meanwhile in the kitchen, everyone were excited after hearing the news. They were all dreaming of becoming the next successor of Um Ahm Jung, the one who could control South Korea’s best restaurant. This was especially so for Min Woo as he was seriously considering to challenge Bong Joo in the competition. Everyone returned to their position as Bong Joo came into the kitchen. He asked Min Woo for the day’s VIP list but Min Woo pretended to be worried for Bong Joo. Sung-Chan was beside the pond, thinking about the announcement and after which went to look Mr Oh asking him to retract his announcement.

“I’m giving you a chance to prove yourself, so give it your best in this competition”, Mr Oh said to Sung-Chan.

In the night, Sung-Chan was hanging around outside when Min Woo approached him.

“You can’t be thinking of participating in the competition, do you? Don’t end up as a laughing stock later”. Min Woo left after saying those words, leaving Sung-Chan gritting his teeth behind.

After getting himself drunk at the bar, Bong Joo finally approached his father Mr Oh, to find out the reason for his decision. After listening to Mr Oh’s explanation, Bong Joo promised his father to win the competition and be a successor that he can be proud of.

On the next day, Mr Oh announced the air bladder (fish maw) of codfish to be the main ingredient for the first round of competition. Bong Joo, Min Woo and Sung-Chan eventually took up the challenge and they were given three days to prepare. Bong Joo appears to be cool but was actually uneasy about it.

Upon hearing the news of master chef Ja Woon’s visit, Sung-Chan went to sought help from him. However, Master Ja Woon only answered that fish maw tastes best when dipped in sesame oil. Sung-Chan burst out laughing as he thinks that it not cookery. After a night of experimenting with the ingredients, Sung-Chan still had no clue what to cook on the day of competition.

The next day morning, Joo Hee bumped into the frustrated Sung-Chan and so asked him if he wanted to go for a ride. After travelling for quite a distance, they eventually reached a shop making chef knives. Joo Hee wanted to get Sung-Chan a new set of knives. The owner of the shop gave them eggs. Sung-Chan looked at the half-eaten boiled egg and got an inspiration suddenly. He hurried back to the restaurant. While on his way back, he stopped by the beach and filled up a container of seawater. Joo Hee was gazing Sung-Chan from afar, seemingly drew a liking for him.

Back at the restaurant, Bong Joo asked Joo Hee where she went and so Joo Hee told him everything. Bong Joo was jealous and felt that Joo Hee didn’t understand him at all. Sung-Chan began to experiment with his new idea in the kitchen. Suk Dong and Sung-Chan worked through the night and this was seen by Mr Oh the next morning.

Min Woo went sourcing for the sauces while Suk Dong “stole” Min Woo’s dish out. Sung-Chan had initially refused to taste it because of integrity but curiosity ultimately “controls” him.

In the kitchen, Sung-Chan faced another problem; the taste of the fish maw was overwhelmed by the other ingredients.

The restaurant received a booking for 30 people, but someone forgot to report it. As there was no time left, Bong Joo ordered everyone to prepare the dishes and order ingredients that could arrive in 30 minutes time. Min Woo found out that Suk Dong was the one who made the blunder and hence went to question him. Sung-Chan tried to protect Suk Dong but his fish maw was destroyed in the process. Min Woo then handed Sung-Chan some fish maw which was not of good quality.

When Bong Joo and Min Woo started making their dish, Sung-Chan still had no idea what to do. Something crossed his mind and Sung-Chan started preparing his dish. Everyone was amazed. Half-way through the competition, Bong Joo’s assistant brought back a secret ingredient (some special vinegar) for Bong Joo.

Mr Oh was impressed with Bong Joo and Min Woo’s dish. Bong Joo made “Codfish Sashimi” and Min Woo made “Fish Maw soup”. Mr Oh was extremely pleased after he tasted Sung-Chan’s dish. After he found out that Sung-Chan actually used seawater in the cooking, he was even more impressed and announced Sung-Chan to be the winner.

Min Woo made an objection and hence, Mr Oh asked him to taste Sung-Chan’s dish. Bong Joo and Min Woo tasted it and they were convinced. Mr Oh then mixed the vinegar and sauce with Sung-Chan’s food and it tasted much better. Their food could be better if they actually helped one another.

Um Ahm Jung received a sudden notice of a VIP visiting. After arriving at the restaurant, the guest was not satisfied at Mr Oh’s recommendation of palace cuisine and wanted something simpler. He ordered Doenjang Jjigae(fermented soybean soup). Despite being aware of the risk of being disqualified from the competition, Sung-Chan volunteered to prepare the soup. Outside the restaurant, Jin Soo (Nam Sang Mi) was trying to get past the guards into the restaurant but she was thrown out by them.

Sung-Chan served the Doenjang Jjigae to the VIP but after having a sip, the VIP put down his spoon…
